The Salem City Council voted July 17 to amend the city ordinance that sets fees for bulky-item curbside pickup, aligning the ordinance with the new waste-management contract.
Under the amended language, residents will pay $20 for collection of each bulky item and $40 for a mattress or box spring. Councilors said the new contract increased the general bulky-item allowance but lowered the mattress pickup fee from $50 to $40.
Councillor Cohen highlighted that the amended program includes curbside collection for freon-containing appliances such as air conditioners, and for CRT televisions and computer monitors, which Councilor Cohen said will improve safe disposal and monitoring of those items.
Councilors noted the change was added previously to the ordinance to make fee amounts transparent and to reflect contract-driven adjustments. The motion for first passage carried on voice vote; further readings or codification steps will follow the charter process for ordinance amendments.
