Commission postpones gas‑station distance ordinance for further work

The Planning and Zoning Commission voted to postpone consideration of an ordinance that would add distance restrictions for gas stations in the City of Laredo. The proposed amendment to section 24.65.0 of the Laredo Land Development Code would impose distance limits (100 or 200 feet, depending on tank capacity) between gas stations and residential districts, schools or daycare facilities.
Planning staff asked the commission to postpone the item to revise the language and address comments raised at an earlier meeting. Staff said it would likely take a couple of meetings to complete the revisions. When asked whether staff intended to carry out separate stakeholder engagement beyond the required public notice and city council hearing, staff said they were not planning additional stakeholder outreach: “No. That I'm we're not planning on including that in the process,” staff said.
Staff noted the city would follow statutory public‑notice procedures, including publishing notice in the newspaper 15 days prior to the city council hearing. Staff also said the city used San Antonio’s ordinance as one model but wanted to review other cities before returning with revised language. The commission closed the public hearing and voted to postpone the item time‑uncertain to allow staff to refine the ordinance language.
