Planning department reports slight dip in site-plan activity; staffing and design-guideline work ongoing

At the end of the July 16 meeting the Planning Department presented its monthly update noting that site-plan submissions are modestly flat compared with the prior year, public-records requests have decreased slightly, and due‑diligence/pre-application activity is steady. The department reported recent staffing changes: two project engineers left for Metro positions, one replacement (Lee Hallman) has been hired and another engineering position and a planner position remain open with interviews planned.
The department said it added a second zoning‑inspector position in this year’s budget to improve enforcement capacity, including night and weekend coverage. Staff also reported progress on a design-guideline update — including discussion of formal open-space definitions and potential alternatives — and upcoming Cherry Lane study meetings. The mayor’s town hall is scheduled for Aug. 4 at First Presbyterian Church to discuss Town Creek, downtown traffic, homelessness and public safety; planning commission and council members were invited.
