Conservation Corps to distribute mosquito‑bucket kits in August to reduce backyard fogging

The Green Bay Conservation Corps will assemble and distribute about 25 mosquito‑bucket kits in August as a low‑cost, non‑chemical way for residents to reduce mosquito populations on private property.

Maria Otto of the Conservation Corps told the Sustainability Commission the program borrows from a national “Mosquito Bucket” idea that builds small habitat containers where mosquitoes lay eggs; adding a biological control called BTI prevents larvae from completing their life cycle. “The idea of a mosquito bucket is an alternative to using chemicals and fogging on like, in your grass to eliminate the the pest of mosquitoes,” she said. She explained the kits will include basic materials (a 5‑gallon bucket, mesh/netting and instructions) and a BTI puck; a single puck can treat multiple buckets and replacement BTI is inexpensive.

Otto said the corps already uses reclaimed buckets and volunteer materials and that the finished kits will be free to the public. She said the organization will announce pickup logistics and make a social‑media post when kits are ready. The corps expects to have assembled kits ready for pickup in August and will publicize the pickup plan on the city’s and its own social channels.
