The committee on July 17 approved a resolution authorizing the county’s land information and GIS department to update shoreland zoning maps administratively in cases where the county board’s action would only confirm a determination already made by another jurisdiction or agency. Jamie Ludovic (chief community development officer) explained staff have encountered cases where external data sources (for example, a DNR wetland or navigability update, or municipal annexations) change regulatory status in real time and county maps lag behind. Ludovic said the resolution would allow the GIS team to amend county maps quickly when other governing authorities change the data and that staff would report map changes to the committee and county board at least annually. Committee members clarified that the resolution is procedural and does not change policy on shoreland determinations; staff confirmed it is intended to keep maps accurate so constituents and staff use the same current data. The committee voted in favor of the resolution.
