The Eden Prairie City Council on Tuesday appointed student representatives to a set of advisory commissions after reviewing more than 54 applications submitted this spring. Appointees will serve a school‑year term beginning in September and the city will hold an orientation for the students in late August.
Staff described the student‑on‑commission program as a multi‑year effort that draws strong interest; students participate in meetings, projects and community events but do not hold a vote on commissions. Councilmember Toomey moved the slate of appointments and council members seconded the motion; the full slate was approved by voice vote.
Appointments were made to the Flying Cloud Airport Advisory Commission, Heritage Preservation Commission, Human Rights and Diversity Commission, Parks and Recreation and Natural Resources Commission and the Sustainability Commission. Staff noted the program develops civic knowledge and frequently leads to continued volunteerism, commission appointments or other community involvement.
