Council awards $1.36 million contract to repair Max Lockwood Drive

The Statesboro City Council approved an award of contract to Ellis Wood Contracting Inc. for the Max Lockwood Drive roadway improvement project (ENG124), with a contract amount reported in the agenda as $1,363,320 and funding from T-SPLOST. City staff told council the work goes beyond resurfacing and includes stone drainage repairs, sidewalk work and a new entrance from Fair Roads into the parking lot behind the Honeywell Building used by parks and recreation. Staff said a two-way conversion was considered but not recommended and that some items were removed from the bid to lower the cost from earlier estimates. Public works staff described the road as in poor condition and recommended the contract to move the project forward. Parks and recreation staff supported the new parking entrance as a benefit to facility access. Council voted to award the contract; the motion carried. The project is funded with T-SPLOST dollars and will proceed through standard construction scheduling and inspection; staff noted the scope accounted for adjacent improvements already planned for the area.
