Suwannee County commissioners on July 15 approved a 7.5% increase to the county’s employee health‑insurance premium, after staff and Gallagher Insurance negotiated renewal terms. The board voted 4‑0 to accept the increase and to absorb the additional cost in county budgeting.
Why it matters: County staff flagged rising claims history and insurance market pressure as drivers of higher premiums. The board discussed options and concluded that keeping employee contributions unchanged was the preferred approach for now. Commissioners and staff said the county will continue to monitor claims and workplace safety to contain future increases.
Vice Chairman Commissioner White, who led the insurance negotiations, reported that other counties began renewal discussions at rates as high as 15%, then negotiated down; in Suwannee County’s case the final renewal is a 7.5% increase. Commissioner White said, “we have got it down to 7 and a half percent,” and staff presented the estimated budget impact: roughly $314,360 more for the coming fiscal year.
County Manager and HR staff and Gallagher Insurance reviewed alternative plan designs and deductibles with the commissioners; the board opted not to change plan design or employee deductibles in this renewal. Commissioner Perkins moved to approve the renewal; Commissioner White seconded and the vote was 4‑0 in favor.
Ending: The board directed staff to include the additional $314,360 in upcoming budget workshops and to continue workplace‑safety and wellness efforts to help control claims going forward.
