Board tables CFO and controller job descriptions for executive review

Lakeland trustees paused action on proposed changes to the chief financial officer and a new controller job description, saying they want the superintendent and the board to review organizational reporting and job qualifications before approving any changes.
The board was presented the CFO job description and a draft controller description; staff explained that responsibilities such as facilities, IT and food service had migrated under the CFO’s oversight and the new controller role would reflect accounting needs. Board members said they wanted clearer organizational charts, current names and salaries for positions that would report to the controller, and stronger minimum qualifications for a controller position (trustees mentioned a bachelor’s degree and familiarity with GASB accounting principles).
One trustee moved that the matter be discussed in executive session and that the superintendent be given time to review the proposed documents; the motion passed. Trustees said they supported defining “sandboxes” (areas of responsibility) and tightening the written qualifications for a role described as controller.
Action taken: trustees agreed to continue the discussion in executive session and table action on the job descriptions until further review. Staff will bring an organizational chart and recommended qualification language back to the board.
