Lakeland School District trustees voted Tuesday to table proposed revisions to student search and seizure policies and a draft parent consent form for breathalyzer screening, saying they want legal counsel to review the documents before any policy change.
A public commenter raised concerns during public input about the language in the draft policy. “This is regarding item I .1. B policy 33 70 searches and seizures,” Anita Dukesick Ralsam said, asking the board to reconsider wording she said confused students about sex and gender. “I ask for reconsideration of this term in the policy.”
Board members and staff said the proposed updates were returned to the policy committee after staff and principals reviewed them. The documents included a draft breathalyzer consent form to be provided to parents so they would be aware that breath screening may be used at certain district events.
Trustee discussion focused on three practical concerns: whether parents would be notified, who would administer breathalyzer tests, and whether equipment and personnel would meet calibration and training standards. The policy drafts reflect different school practices — trustees said some schools already use breath screening at structured events while others do not — and members sought a uniform district approach.
“Legal probably needs to weigh in on both policies and form,” a trustee said during the discussion, and trustees subsequently moved to table the policies and the form pending legal review.
