City officials announced July 15 that the city has reached a letter of intent to sell Hotel Topeka to a private hotelier. Council members said the proposed sale aligns with an earlier pledge not to use general-fund dollars for hotel renovation and seeks to return taxpayer funds invested while putting the property under private hotel management.
Councilmember Duncan told the governing body the sale to a reputable hotelier will provide a name-brand flag for the hotel, protect the conference center at the Stormont Vail Events Center and bring new sales-tax revenue to support local businesses. He said the county will coordinate its own participation to protect county investment in the conference center.
Council members said the sale was the best offer received, would keep the facility operating as a large conference venue and would protect prior public investments. No purchase price or final contract was presented during the meeting; councilmembers said county officials would finalize county-level agreements as needed and that details would be presented in subsequent sessions as the sale moves through due diligence and final approvals.
