The neighborhood improvement association (NIA) submitted a letter asking the city to consider the site for park or open space; staff noted the NIA and Shawnee County Parks and Rec had discussed potential acquisition and that the parcel physically could be combined with adjacent lots to create roughly an acre that Parks said it could consider for a small neighborhood park.
No applicant representative attended the hearing. Commissioners and several public speakers said they wanted the opportunity for direct applicant engagement and clarity about the 30‑day promise the owner reportedly gave the NIA. After extended discussion about whether to proceed without the applicant present, the commission voted to table the item to the August meeting to allow time for the applicant or a local representative to appear or for neighborhood negotiations to conclude.
The motion to table was approved by roll call; the commission specified a date certain (August) to avoid re‑advertising and to encourage applicant participation.
