Dakota County opioid-response representative urges Rosemount to join purple-lighting vigil and awareness efforts

Jackie Young, speaking as a Rosemount resident and a representative of the Dakota County Opioid Response Committee, asked the council to partner with the county and the Minnesota Department of Health on a multifaceted August awareness campaign focused on fentanyl and overdoses.
Young cited two awareness dates—Aug. 21, National Fentanyl Prevention and Awareness Day, and Aug. 31, International Overdose Awareness Day—and asked the city to consider lighting a building in purple and hosting a vigil on Aug. 31. Young said Dakota County lost two Rosemount community members in 2024 and that she lost her 30-year-old son in 2021 to an overdose; she asked the city for “action and advocacy to save lives.”
City staff said they had been in contact with Young and would continue to coordinate; the council did not take a formal vote but staff confirmed follow-up conversations were underway. Young said logistics for a city-supported vigil and building lighting were still being developed and that the Dakota County committee would welcome municipal participation.
Young asked for continued city involvement and community outreach; city staff and the police chief were noted contacts for further planning.
