Council approves purchase of 0.75-acre parcel to close west-side gap in Case Creek Trail

The Layton City Council adopted a resolution authorizing the city to enter a land-purchase agreement with DNR Ventures to acquire 0.75 acres for $178,910 to close a gap on the west segment of the Case Creek Trail.
Parks staff said the parcel will allow construction of a 10-foot-wide paved trail to connect two existing trail segments and tie into the West Davis Corridor trail network. The agreement also includes the city constructing a six-foot black vinyl-coated fence to separate the trail from adjacent private property, demolishing an existing freestanding concrete wall, and obtaining a temporary construction easement for an access road on the west side to build the trail. Staff said the owner agreed to remove the agricultural protection area covering the portion of property the city would purchase. Because the property has been in an agricultural protection area since about 2014, staff said the owner would take steps with the county to remove the protection for the portion to be acquired.
Parks staff recommended adoption of resolution 25-32; the council approved the resolution during the meeting. Staff said completing the acquisition will allow the city to construct the final connection so pedestrians and cyclists can travel nearly from Main Street to the West Davis Corridor on a continuous trail.
