Council amends BG liquor license rules to allow outdoor events and remove music ban

The City Council on May 19 approved Ordinance 28‑49, amending alcohol licensing rules for class BG (gaming) businesses to allow additional on‑premises games and permit license holders to apply for outdoor beer gardens if the site complies with the city’s zoning code.
Roxanne, who drafted the ordinance language at the council’s request, told council members the change began with owners of BG‑licensed locations reporting they were barred from hosting food trucks, outdoor bag tournaments and other events. The amendment removes language prohibiting ‘‘other types of games’’ and clarifies that a BG licensee may apply for an outdoor beer garden, but any application must comply with chapter 118 (zoning).
Council members debated whether to retain a distinct BG license class. Roxanne said a BG classification remains useful because these facilities derive the majority of revenue from gaming rather than food or beverage sales, and so a different license classification can be appropriate.
During debate councilors also moved to remove the subsection that had prohibited “live music, DJ, karaoke” on licensed premises; the council voted to strike that language so the ordinance no longer addresses music restrictions. After amendment, the council voted to approve Ordinance 28‑49; the motion passed 3–2.
Ending: With the ordinance adopted as amended, BG license holders may pursue food trucks, contests and other events and may seek approval for outdoor beer gardens when site zoning allows; the city clarified that food trucks remain subject to the city’s food‑truck permitting process.
