The town committee received and filed two public-service announcement drafts produced with Seminole Ridge High School students aimed at equestrian safety on multiuse trails; members favored short driver-focused clips and instructed staff and students to schedule filming and provide edited 15- and 30-second cutdowns.
The Roadways, Trails and Greenway Advisory Committee on July 17 received and filed two public-service announcement drafts produced with Seminole Ridge High School students aimed at equestrian safety on the town's multiuse trails.
Committee members said the primary goal is to influence drivers and other trail users to slow and avoid startling horses. The committee voted to "receive and file" the two drafts and asked the student producers and staff to finalize edits and propose filming dates so the town can obtain short clips suitable for social media and the town website.
Mary McNicholas, who helped arrange the student partnership, said the group prepared two scripts and draft cuts: "we literally we've worked on 2 different PSA drafts. 1 is a 1 minute, PSA, and another is a 2 minute." McNicholas and the student producers presented the material and offered shorter 15- and 30-second cuts for use as social-media spots.
Committee members said shorter messages are more likely to be viewed. One member said, "shorter is better," and others noted a driver-focused message would reach the greatest number of non-rider motorists. Students and producers told the committee they will film footage the committee supplies and provide both the full one-minute piece and condensed edits so the town can distribute them across platforms.
The committee approved a motion to receive the drafts and encouraged staff to coordinate filming with the students and local riders. Craig Lauer, the town's public works superintendent and staff liaison, and Sammy Brown, town clerk assistant, were present to take the committee's edits and arrange next steps. Producers said they will attempt to schedule filming within the next two weeks but noted availability conflicts with the students' school calendars.
Committee members requested the final edited pieces include a short reference for viewers on how to get more information (for example, "Contact Town Hall" or a town website link) and suggested including a citation to the Florida statute governing motor vehicle operators and animals. Committee member Ashley Bruce verbally provided the statute number discussed during the meeting as "316.0825." The group also directed staff to plan for companion 15- and 30-second cutdowns to maximize reach on social platforms.
Next steps: the student producers will schedule filming dates and deliver edited cuts to staff; staff will circulate the final drafts to the committee for any last comments before distribution.
