Ryan, Parks and Recreation Director, told the Yukon Park Board that substantial renovation work at Kimball Bay Pool is essentially complete and staff will mark the upgrades with a free Back-to-School Bash tentatively scheduled for Aug. 8. "We're just really excited with everything that's going on out at Kimball Bay," Ryan said.
The department said the large cantilever shade on the west side and a matching smaller umbrella on the east side are in place; crews need only install the umbrella fabric on the large structure. Staff reported the pool shell was sandblasted, repaired and repainted, lights were refurbished, fences replaced, and the small chemical building will be re-sided and roofed to match the main pool building. Ryan said accessibility steps were due in mid-July to improve safe entry and exit.
The Back-to-School Bash will be a free community swim night featuring inflatables, water-tag games, music and giveaways; Ryan described it as a celebration rather than a formal ribbon cutting. Park staff said small finishing tasks remain — the cool decking around what was the baby pool and final umbrella installation — and they expect those to be done before the next park board meeting.
Board members complimented staff work and asked questions about remaining tasks and timing. Jerome, a parks staff member who assisted with the presentation, showed photos of before-and-after repairs and new shade structures. Ryan said the department will complete final painting and reinstall picnic tables once work finishes.
The report did not include a formal vote or binding decision; the board received the update and no action items were recorded for immediate approval.
