The Yukon City Council on July 15 approved a nonexclusive 10-year cable television franchise agreement with Cox Communications, with the agreement including an option for a second 10-year renewal. The vote was unanimous.
The franchise lets Cox “erect, maintain, and operate transmission and distribution facilities within the city of Yukon rights of way,” according to the agenda summary presented at the meeting. Mayor Brian Pilmore called for discussion before the motion and said the company has been a long-term partner in the community.
Robbie (Cox representative) and Kate (Cox Charities) described the company’s local history and community investments. Robbie said Cox has served Yukon for “over 40 years” and highlighted recent local investments including a retail store and mobile product offerings. Kate summarized Cox’s employee-driven Cox Charities grants and education support, saying Yukon organizations such as Compassionate Hands, Manna Pantry and several schools have received grant support.
After the presentation, the council voted to approve the franchise. Vice Mayor Jeff Wooten, Council Members Shelley Selby, Adam Shriver and Rodney Zimmerman each voted “yes,” and Mayor Brian Pilmore announced the passage.
The agreement was described at the meeting as a renewal following a prior 20-year agreement; the new contract term is 10 years with an option for an additional 10-year renewal. The council did not discuss specific fee or regulatory changes during the public presentation.
Cox representatives emphasized both network investment and charitable giving: Robbie noted a company-wide capital investment of $12 billion over four years to deepen fiber, and Kate described local philanthropy and education grants.
The council took no additional amendments and authorized the mayor to sign associated documents as part of the approval process.
