Council reviews tourism branding and places Route 66 model-train donation on agenda

City tourism staff presented a proposed new logo for the Office of Tourism and the committee considered a donation agreement for a Route 66 model-train exhibit that would be housed in the Broadway building if the city completes the property purchase.

Kevin McCoy, who identified himself as the director of tourism, showed two versions of a seal-style logo hand-drawn by a local artist (Tomazewski). McCoy said the design is intended for tourism marketing—business cards, a website and merchandise—and that color variations and usage examples will be provided. Several aldermen described the logo as “cartoony” or “whimsical”; others said it was friendly and approachable and that a color mock-up might address some concerns. The council voted to place the logo approval on the regular agenda so members can consider adoption after seeing color versions.

City Attorney Hovlett and staff then introduced a donation agreement from John and Darlene Rue for a Route 66 model-train exhibit; the agreement is contingent on the city closing on the Broadway building (address referenced). Staff said Illinois Landmarks will help disassemble, box and transport the exhibit at no cost to the city, and the exhibit’s mechanical engineer (named in packet as Mike Arson) and the donor have committed to assist with reassembly. The donation agreement was placed on the regular agenda; staff noted the mayor would sign if the council approves and the property closing occurs.

No formal adoption or transfer took place at the Committee of the Whole; both items were scheduled for the regular council agenda for action.
