The Westerly School Committee on June 18 heard administrative reports highlighting sustainability recognition, improved student assessment results and progress on labor contracts, and the committee learned who will serve as the student representative next year.
Superintendent (name not specified) congratulated graduates and credited staff and community support. The superintendent said Westerly Public Schools has made “notable strides in sustainability recognition,” citing a Green Ribbon award at Dunn's Corners and a range of academic and infrastructure initiatives. The superintendent also said eleventh-grade science results on the Next Generation Science Assessment for Westerly High School are the highest ever recorded at WHS.
Assistant Superintendent Steve (name given as Steve in the transcript) reminded the public that the district will serve free meals to all children 18 and younger from July 7 through Aug. 1 at the White Rock Soccer Fields on 49 White Rock Road, Monday through Friday from 11:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m., weather permitting; children must be on-site to receive a meal.
The superintendent reported that the district and teachers have a new contract in place that both the committee and administration regard as fiscally responsible while honoring teaching staff. Negotiations with custodians, paraprofessionals and other noncertified staff were described as nearing completion.
The superintendent described the process for selecting a student representative to the committee: high-school applicants are reviewed by high-school administration and may be evaluated on academics, writing samples or informal interviews. The committee was told that Brady Cassidy will serve as the student representative next year.
Members praised staff and administrators for “wonderful high moments” this school year and said the reports reflected broad community and staff effort. No committee action was required for these reports.
