Hillsboro students report on 10‑day exchange in Fukuroi, Japan

Ten Hillsboro students and their chaperones presented to the City Council on July 15 about a 10‑day sister‑city exchange to Fukuroi, Japan, June 23–July 2. The delegation visited Hiroshima’s Peace Park and Museum, toured Fukuroi municipal sites including a tea‑processing plant and a disaster prevention center, and stayed with host families in Fukuroi.
Michaela Conetti, city management program coordinator, introduced the delegation. Student speakers described visiting Kakegawa Castle, taking part in a tea ceremony, touring a school and exchanging gifts with Fukuroi officials. Ricky Canoke summarized the Hiroshima visit: "We visited the Peace Park, and it actually had a building that actually still remained after the bombing," he said. Students said the host‑family stays were a highlight and provided everyday cultural context they said could not be learned from textbooks.
The delegation thanked the city and Fukuroi organizers for the trip and named local supporters, chaperones and translators. The presentation closed with a short video recap and a distribution of gifts. The council received the report; no action was required.
