Washington County attorneys and supervisors discussed a narrow strip of county‑owned land at the corner of Berquist Road and Tripholi Road and moved to refer the matter to the full board for sale after a survey showed the parcel is unnecessary for county use.
The county attorney told the committee the strip was acquired years ago to work on a culvert under the roadway and that a recent survey shows the small strip lies along the edge of a private parcel. “There is not a need for the county to own this particular strip of property,” the County Attorney said.
Committee members noted the strip is steep and not developable on its own, and that the town's planning board is considering a subdivision for the adjoining property. The attorney said the finance committee must first refer to the full board a declaration that the parcel is no longer needed; that declaration requires a two‑thirds roll call vote and, if made, the county would put the parcel out for competitive bids.
The committee discussed logistics, confirming the strip was surveyed and that a precise acreage will be provided for the sale packet; the county deed lists the parcel as 1.380 acres when acquired in 1954, and one supervisor described the strip as “almost 400 feet long.” A supervisor moved to send the sale referral to the full board, and the committee voted in favor.
Action and next steps: the committee voted to forward a resolution to the full board to declare the strip surplus and to authorize the county to solicit competitive bids; staff will prepare a sale packet, including the updated survey acreage and legal description, for the board packet.
