Morgan County commissioners unanimously approved a proclamation July 16 declaring September 2025 as “Morgan County Goes Purple” in recognition of National Recovery Month. Tara Mason, founder and executive director of the Hope Dealer Project, described the Morgan County Goes Purple campaign and the statewide initiative that launched in 2023. Mason told commissioners the campaign seeks to increase awareness of substance-use disorders, reduce stigma and celebrate recovery; she urged residents and businesses to participate by lighting structures purple, wearing purple and sharing recovery stories during September. In her remarks, Mason said West Virginia became the first state to officially go purple in 2023 when all 55 counties participated, and she framed the local proclamation as symbolic support for prevention, treatment and recovery resources. A motion to approve the proclamation passed by voice vote. Commissioners said they would display purple lighting in the commission office and encouraged community participation in related events and outreach during September. The proclamation directs county officials and citizens to observe recovery-month activities and community events.
