Commission signs letters supporting Phase 6–7 streetscape construction, cites stormwater benefits

Morgan County commissioners authorized the commission president July 16 to sign letters of support to the West Virginia Department of Transportation for Phase 6 and Phase 7 of a downtown streetscape construction project. Commissioners described the project as new sidewalks, drainage improvements and updated stormwater features that replaced failing or ponding sections of sidewalk. One commissioner said after an earlier phase of streetscape work a heavy rain produced no interior water intrusion at a nearby theater, attributing that outcome to the project’s improved drainage. The letters seek state transportation support for new sidewalks on both sides of designated blocks and other street and drainage work. Commissioners and staff discussed lighting and aesthetics as part of the project; a commissioner noted lighting costs and that sidewalks and drainage work are expected to reduce local stormwater impacts. A motion to authorize the commission president to sign the letters of support passed by voice vote. Commissioners asked staff to provide the signed letters to the West Virginia Department of Transportation and to coordinate construction timing with local stakeholders.
