Commission hears updates on Claxton opening, new tennis courts and pickleball feasibility; school projects to take priority

Needham commissioners received capital-project updates July 14: Claxton park is slated to open Aug. 1, the newly rebuilt tennis courts are substantially complete and a previously completed feasibility study for town pickleball courts will move forward through town engineering and Park & Forestry for scheduling and construction. Staff said Claxton’s irrigation and generator issues were being resolved and that grass and parking work looked to be complete in advance of the Aug. 1 opening. The tennis-court reconstruction — including poured post-action concrete and newly set poles — was described as about 80% complete pending painting, fencing and walkways. Commissioners stressed that town-managed school projects (for example, Elliott School site work) must be scheduled in the limited summer construction window and therefore will generally be completed ahead of non-school projects. Staff told the commission the pickleball feasibility study completed previously will be accepted by the town and that funding will come from the town budget (not Community Preservation funds); Park & Forestry and town engineering will be asked to schedule the work and advise on projected timelines. Commissioners asked staff to coordinate calls with town engineering, Park & Forestry and user groups to determine a realistic schedule and to ensure user groups are apprised of sequencing and access impacts during construction. No formal construction contracts or award decisions were taken at the meeting; staff will return with timelines and coordination proposals.
