Sheriff requests vehicles, radar and marine craft upgrades; commissioners assent to some immediate equipment needs

The sheriff’s office presented a package of equipment requests including a replacement Tahoe for inmate transport (total outfitted cost cited as $60,342.32), seven new Stalker radar units with calibration, and two personal watercraft to replace craft described as “no longer serviceable.”

On the replacement Tahoe, staff described the existing vehicle as having high mileage (276,000 miles) and said the replacement was a need rather than a want for long‑distance transports. Commissioners did not object to the replacement vehicle during the workshop.

The sheriff’s office also requested seven additional Stalker radar units and a calibration visit; staff explained that annual calibration is required if deputies will rely on radar evidence in court and described calibration as an annual cost (the workshop cited $3,000 for calibration work, which was described as covering calibration of the department’s units during a site visit). The sheriff’s office representative said new units arrive initially calibrated but that periodic (annual) calibrations are required for court testimony.

Marine patrol requested replacement of one or two personal watercraft; quoted figures in the workshop were approximately $30,000 per craft in preliminary vendor quotes, but staff said they would bring specific quotes and noted that outfitting (lights, radios, decaling) could add to the final cost. Commissioners asked for additional documentation and price comparisons before committing.

There were no formal votes recorded on the equipment requests during the workshop. Some items — the Tahoe and calibration funding as an ongoing budget line — were described by commissioners as appropriate to move into the regular operating budget; others, such as the personal watercraft and outfitting costs, were deferred pending additional vendor quotes and justification of the final price.
