Tompkins County legislature confirms Britney Earl as county social services commissioner

The Tompkins County Legislature unanimously confirmed Britney Earl as the county’s next Commissioner of Social Services on July 15. The confirmation follows a county administrator appointment and a roll-call vote recorded as unanimous.

The resolution presented by Legislator Travis Brooks described the commissioner role as “vital to the continued provision of essential social services” and stated the county administrator’s intention to appoint Earl. The resolution directs that Britney Earl assume the legal authorities, duties and responsibilities of the office effective August 1, 2025, and serve a five‑year term.

Earl spoke briefly after the confirmation and thanked the legislature. She said she has worked with many individuals and families served by the department and described the timing as “a time of significant change,” citing recent federal legislation that she said is changing how families access benefits such as Medicaid and SNAP. Earl said she intends to lead “with transparency, empathy, and action” and emphasized listening to clients and working with community partners.

Legislators did not record any roll-call opposition; the clerk announced a unanimous vote and the legislature welcomed the new commissioner.

The resolution requires the appointment to be filed with appropriate New York State agencies in accordance with law. No additional budgetary actions were taken as part of the confirmation vote.
