The Riviera Beach City Council voted to establish a Youth Council to give high‑school students a formal mechanism to participate in municipal government, education programming and city planning.
The resolution (73‑25) authorizes a student council composed of resident students in grades 9–12. Assistant to the city manager LaChanda (Makaria/Makeria) Wester (presenting as Makaria Wester) and Councilmember Casheba Miller Anderson described the program as a mentorship and civic‑leadership initiative that will amplify youth voices and connect students with city offices, schools and local boards.
Staff said they plan to post an application next week, accept applications for approximately one month, and aim to have students in place for a September start. The program outline calls for up to 13 student members, appointed by council members and the mayor according to the bylaws that staff will bring back for final review.
Mayor Douglas Lawson and Miller Anderson praised the students who developed the proposal and said the council should involve youth in planning city amenities such as parks and recreation upgrades funded by recent bonds. The clerk recorded a unanimous vote to adopt the resolution.
