Council backs application for state TAP funds to design Aspen-area sidewalks

The Evanston City Council on June 17 approved Resolution 25-27 authorizing staff to submit a Transportation Alternatives Program (TAP) application to the Wyoming Department of Transportation for design-only funding for sidewalk improvements in the Aspen neighborhood.
Planning/engineering staff described the proposed work as extending sidewalk along South Ridge Road up to Saddle Ridge Road to connect to the recreation center and provide safer pedestrian routes in an area where people currently walk in the roadway. The application requested design funding only; state program rules now require a separate later application for construction funding based on the completed design and cost forecast.
Staff said the sidewalks are included in past planning documents (the 2010 master plan pathway network) and that the design-phase application is a first step; an award would not be known until late fall. Council members supported submitting the application so the city can design and later pursue construction funding.
Council introduced and seconded the resolution and approved it by voice vote.
