Board approves Student to Industry Connections course for students receiving special education services

Canyon ISD authorized an innovative, state‑approved course to support transition and employability skills for special education students beginning 2025–26.
The Canyon ISD Board on June 9 approved offering the state‑approved innovative course “Student to Industry Connections” in special education classes beginning with the 2025–26 school year.
Mr. McClure presented the course under Texas Administrative Code §74.27, explaining the course is transition‑focused, uses the Next Up curriculum, and emphasizes employability and life skills such as workplace behavior, communication, decision making and goal setting. The course is intended for students receiving special education services who need individualized transition support and may or may not participate in endorsements or industry certifications depending on their graduation plan and IEP.
One trustee who is a parent of a child with special needs praised the course as a valuable transition resource. The board approved the course 7–0; staff said Britney, the director of special education, was present to answer more detailed questions about implementation and individual student placement.
Administration recommended adding the course to the district catalog for 2025–26 and to assign implementation to special education staff and transition coordinators.
