Sheldon ISD outlines generator, restroom and campus projects; several bids to go to May 20 board

Sheldon ISD’s bond and facilities director briefed trustees on construction progress at the new C.E. King ninth/tenth grade campus and presented multiple planned contract awards and summer projects the district will ask the board to approve.
“We are making great progress at that building,” said the district’s bond and facilities director, describing exterior work, academy wings and interior spaces. The presentation included aerial photos and an update that the new CTE wing and academic academies are substantially enclosed.
Major items staff said are scheduled as board action items on May 20 or otherwise being advanced for summer work:
• A new emergency generator and installation for the CE King ninth grade campus; staff said the generator bid came in at $1,100,000 and that installation will require substantial electrical work this summer.
• Backup generators or backup power for MDF/IDF technology rooms at CE King High School (presented as an action item; pricing and technical design were discussed with Huckabee).
• Restroom renovations at Monahan and Royalwood campuses, with a bid cited at $1,290,000; staff said Royalwood’s original construction predates ADA standards and renovations require bringing multiple fixtures and circulation spaces up to code.
• Renovations to multiple restrooms at CE King High School (planned summer work if board approves), and broader work to create additional storage and reconfigure restroom entrances for safety and traffic flow.
• A required turning lane for Knoll Middle School: the district said Harris County has required a turning lane based on a traffic impact analysis related to increased capacity.
• Interactive classroom monitors (touch flat panels) for the new King ninth/tenth campus; staff said an early purchase is being recommended to avoid potential tariffs.
Staff said some bids came in lower than expected for certain projects (the King Davis center was cited as coming in under estimate) and that the district will sequence construction to avoid disrupting summer school and academy programs. Trustees asked about ADA accommodations, timing and contractor capacity; staff said work would begin once board approval is granted and would be sequenced so projects start after school ends and are completed over the summer.
