Norfolk council rejects conditional-use permit for short-term rental at 429 Fauquier Street

Norfolk City Council on Aug. 12 voted not to adopt an ordinance that would have granted a conditional-use permit to allow a short-term vacation rental at 429 Fauquier Street. The planning commission had recommended approval by a 6-to-1 vote, but the council voted the ordinance down.
The council considered Part 4, which sought to authorize a short-term rental unit at the address. After the roll call on the ordinance, Councilmember Clanton, Councilmember Doyle, Councilmember Johnson, Councilmember McGee, Councilmember Page, Councilmember Smigiel, Councilmember Thomas and Councilmember Alexander all voted not to adopt the ordinance; the mayor announced the motion failed.
Meeting materials show the application had been considered by the planning commission, which recommended approval 6'to'1. Councilmembers did not elaborate in the public record at length about the reasons for the negative votes during the adoption attempt; the transcript records only the roll-call responses and the chair's announcement that the motion failed.
Because the council did not adopt the ordinance, no conditional-use permit was issued that night and no changes to the property's zoning or permitted uses were authorized.
