Glen Rock board appoints Kelly Hughes as principal at Byrd Elementary

The Glen Rock Public School District Board of Education voted to appoint Kelly Hughes as the principal of Byrd Elementary at its meeting. The board moved to discuss personnel item P‑1 on a motion by Miss Calvez, seconded by Mister Hayward; a roll-call vote recorded unanimous approval.

The district said the appointment followed a search that attracted 42 applicants and included three rounds of review. The candidate review committee included parents, teachers, building-level principals, district administrators, supervisors and directors. The committee asked finalists to present a data analysis on Byrd Elementary; board members said Hughes’s presentation and answers showed depth in instructional leadership, team building, and work on school climate and culture.

Dr. Charleston, speaking for the board, described the search and committee feedback and said the district checked references. He told the board that references noted Hughes’s strength in literacy and her focus on culture and teamwork. Kelly Hughes accepted the appointment in remarks to the board: “I’m incredibly honored and excited to accept this position as the principal of Byrd School and to become part of the Glenrock Public School community.”

Board members who cast recorded votes in favor included Miss Carrasolo, Mister Cohen, Mister Hayward, Miss Parlamas, Miss Randell, Miss Stevenson, Miss Calvez and Doctor Robinson. The board president declared the motion passed.

The appointment places Hughes as the building leader at Byrd Elementary; the resolution text presented to the board described her selection and the search process but did not specify an exact start date or contract terms during the public discussion. The superintendent said he would present the compiled documentation and final appointment paperwork through normal personnel procedures.

The board’s discussion also noted community involvement during the search and thanked committee members for participating in the multi-stage process. The board did not receive any public comments on the personnel item during the meeting.

For the community: Byrd Elementary students, families and staff will experience a leadership change; the district said the selection process prioritized instructional leadership, literacy expertise and school climate work. The board did not adopt additional policy changes tied to the appointment at the meeting.
