Board approves Nicole Hurst as supervisor of elementary education

The Glen Rock Board of Education approved personnel resolutions on June 9 that included the appointment of Nicole Hurst to the newly created position of supervisor of elementary education.

Superintendent Doctor Charleston introduced Hurst's appointment and summarized her qualifications: Hurst holds degrees in mathematics and education, a master’s in special education, and has worked in Glen Rock since 2011 in roles including third‑grade teacher, the district’s first elementary math coach, and most recently Hamilton’s intervention strategies coach. Charleston recommended the appointment, saying he “cannot think of a better person” to lead the new elementary supervisor role.

The appointment was bundled with resolutions P1 through P3. The motion to move the agenda item was made by Mister Hayward and seconded by Miss Calvez. During the roll call the board recorded unanimous affirmative votes: Miss Caricella, Mister Cohen, Mister Corey, Mister Hayward, Miss Palamas, Miss Rundell, Miss Stevenson, Miss Calvez and Doctor Robinson all voted yes. After the vote Hurst addressed the board: “I just wanted to thank you all so much for this opportunity,” she said, and described her desire to collaborate with elementary teachers and principals.

Board members asked one clarifying procedural question about the job title’s scope and whether the role covered gifted and talented programming; the board clarified scope during discussion. The appointment takes effect as part of personnel actions approved at the June 9 meeting.

The board’s recorded action was an approval of personnel resolutions that included Hurst’s appointment; the vote was recorded by roll call and carried. Administrators said Hurst will begin work in the new role and collaborate with elementary principals and staff on curriculum, instruction, assessment and intervention work.

No additional conditions or amendments to the appointment were recorded in the meeting minutes.
