City of Spokane launches Plan Spokane 2046 update and asks public to weigh in

Brandon Whitmarsh, a planner with the City of Spokane Planning Department, introduced Plan Spokane 2046 on the city’s ongoing comprehensive-plan update and urged residents to participate in upcoming workshops. "Plan Spokane 2046 is the ongoing effort to update the City of Spokane's comprehensive plan," Whitmarsh said.
The update will set goals and policies to guide growth, investments and city action over the next 20 years, Whitmarsh said. He described chapters in the plan that will cover land use, housing, neighborhoods and economic development and said the city seeks public input to shape programs, policies and regulations.
Whitmarsh placed the update in historical context, saying Spokane began long-term community planning in 2001 with Spokane Horizons under the state Growth Management Act and that the most recent update was known as Shaping Spokane. He said the periodic update provides an opportunity to meet new state regulations and to adjust for changing community needs.
The presentation was informational; no motions or votes were taken. Whitmarsh advised residents to watch for workshops and other engagement opportunities and directed listeners to planspokane.org for more information.
