Saint John board authorizes bidding for Gates Park bathroom and pavilion

The Saint John Park and Recreation Board voted Tuesday to authorize SEH to begin the bidding process for a bathroom and pavilion at Gates Park, with bids to be advertised later in the week and received before the board's August meeting. The motion passed on a 3-0 voice vote.
The authorization follows presentation of final plans by an SEH representative who said the firm is finalizing documents and ready to advertise for contractors. "We are finalizing that, and we are ready to go out to bid on this," SEH representative Glenn Peterson told the board.
Board members said the design — a building with separate men’s and women’s rooms, a central maintenance area and a pavilion surrounded by landscaping — should help address past noise complaints. The board discussed the item as part of Gates Park updates and confirmed this step was to initiate the procurement process rather than to award a contract.
SEH told the board the intent was to advertise later in the week and have bids returned by a date that would allow award before the August board meeting. No contract award or construction schedule was approved at the meeting; the board approved only the authorization to solicit bids.
The Gates Park work was discussed alongside other park maintenance and improvements described later in the meeting, including a referenced upcoming phase of bathroom work. Board members asked no further substantive changes to the plans during the discussion and did not amend the proposal when they moved to authorize bidding.
The board recorded the motion, a second and a unanimous voice vote approving the authorization. No legal citations or funding sources were discussed during the motion; details about the project budget and contractor selection will be presented when bids are returned or at a future meeting.
Board members and staff indicated they expect to review bid results at the August meeting and proceed to award a contract only after bid review and any required follow-up.
