EDC approves $2,000 small-business mini grant for longtime daycare owner

The San Juan Economic Development Corporation approved a $2,000 small-business mini grant to assist the new owner of Ray Banjo Daycare with storefront remodeling and signage. The applicant, who said she recently purchased the longstanding daycare (operating since 1997), told the board she plans storefront improvements and expects additional work and costs beyond the grant. She said she owns the building and will pay any amount above the grant award. Board members confirmed the applicant met program requirements and moved to approve the grant; the board voted in favor during the meeting. During questions, commissioners asked whether the proposed sign would be visible from the nearby Business 83 corridor and whether lighting would be included. The applicant said she intends to add lighting and has revised the design to increase visibility; she also said she is pursuing a city permit (an e-grama, as referenced in the application packet) and attached quotes to her application. The board did not attach additional conditions beyond standard program eligibility requirements.
