Board schedules second reading of policy updates covering executive sessions, CTE and residency rules

At the July 15 Silver Creek School Corporation board meeting, Doctor Briggs, a district staff member who presented policy items, summarized a set of recommended policy changes and said the board will conduct second readings and vote at the next regular meeting.
Briggs highlighted policy 0167.2 to add new reasons for executive session consistent with recent legislative action; changes to policy 2421 to document virtual and CTE courses associated with a new employer-seal pathway for future graduating classes; updates to student-assessment retention to reflect state rules; a change to local policy 5461 to allow students who earned high-school credit before grade 9 to request removal of that credit from their transcript by the end of tenth grade; and an update to policy 5540 to separate "schools and governmental agencies" into guidance that now explicitly includes interactions with the Department of Child Services and law enforcement.
On residency and athletics, Briggs said that prior to July 1 the district’s policy prohibited transferring for athletic reasons; recent action by the Indiana High School Athletic Association (IHSAA) and follow-up statute changes have lifted that restriction and the district is updating its policies to align with the new legal framework. "What lawmakers have done now with new statutes is they, policy now will divide that up...and it gives our schools more guidance in terms of how do you interact and respond when local law enforcement wants to get involved," Briggs said.
Board members present agreed to hold the second reading and vote at the next scheduled meeting; no policy votes were taken at the July 15 session. The district said staff will bring the second reading at the next board meeting so the board may act then.
