Board approves outreach to 11 families about switching elementary attendance zones

District staff asked the board on July 14 for permission to contact families in a small neighborhood on the opposite side of the highway from Super Splash to offer an option to change their children’s assigned elementary school. Staff said the affected area includes 11 students in kindergarten through fourth grade and that the shift would not require new bus routes or additional drivers. Staff said four children from that area already travel to the alternative campus and that changing their attendance assignment could help balance class sizes at Osink Beach Elementary. Transportation staff and the police reviewed routing and told the board the change could be implemented by redirecting the existing bus route; staff emphasized the outreach would be voluntary. Board members discussed grandfathering existing students — preserving current students’ placements — and confirmed that adding incoming kindergarten students to the new zone would require a formal redraw of attendance lines. The board directed staff to contact families to assess interest and said further, more formal action would follow if a boundary change is pursued.
