Parents, community members urge better communication, representation for students in public comments

Two members of the public addressed the board’s open forum July 14 to urge better representation and stronger leadership in district schools.
Damien Doran, who said he has lived in Green Bay since 1989, told the board he had created youth curricula focused on mental health and urged the district to increase representation for “brown” students through teachers, advocates or nonprofits so students feel respected and represented. Doran said he grew up in a difficult household and sees school as an escape for many young people; he offered his time and experience to the district.
A second speaker, identified as Miss Jackson, said she is a mother of children in the district and a community activist. She voiced concerns about leadership, how schools communicate with parents about disciplinary incidents, and the need for administrators to contact parents promptly when students are suspended or removed from class. Jackson said parents must be able to reach administrators and called for increased accountability and clearer communication when incidents occur during school hours.
District staff thanked the speakers and said public comments would be noted; no board action was taken July 14 as a result of the comments.
