County decision to consolidate courts to Jefferson will leave Genevabuilding vacant; city offered alternatives

City Manager Marquette briefed the Geneva City Council on July 14 about the countycourt consolidation decision and the possible vacancy of a city-owned building on West Main Street currently occupied by the Western County Court.
Marquette said the county informed the city it will consolidate the county court to Jefferson and that Genevathe city had formally offered an alternative that, in the citypresentation, would have saved the county an estimated $174,000 over six years. "We did prepare it up for our offer for the county . . . we believe would have saved them a significant amount of money," Marquette said. The countyresponse acknowledged the offer but indicated it would proceed with consolidation; Marquette said he also included a response from the county prosecutor about the lease and any termination date.
Marquette said the countydecision will leave the city-owned building on West Main vacant at the expiration of the county's lease. He described next steps the city will take: the city will evaluate citywide facilities, discuss repurposing and consider options such as using the building for city functions or marketing it for external use. "Those are kind of exciting discussions that we may have to really . . . look at repurposing, you know, reconfiguring," Marquette said.
Marquette reminded council that the city had previously reviewed the building and its systems and noted the building had served as the library before the county occupied it in the late 1990s. He said the city will not assume an immediate decision but will begin internal reviews and bring options to council over coming months.
