Library foundation reports new board members, fundraising needs and String City updates

Representatives of the Nashville Public Library Foundation updated the board on fundraising and events, including new foundation board members, an ongoing appeal for support of the Civil Rights Room, rising operating costs for the "Limitless Libraries" bookmobile, and upcoming Begin Bridal gatherings and a gala tied to visiting authors.

The items matter because foundation fundraising supports exhibits, outreach and mobile services that supplement library operations, and the foundation’s activities affect program continuity while Main is partially closed.

A foundation representative announced new board additions (Lillian Blackshear, Paige Clancy, Rasco Dean, Margaret — full surname not stated) and two young-leader interns. The foundation asked board members to identify potential funders for the Civil Rights Room after one long-term funder withdrew; Vanderbilt remains a supporter. The foundation also said operating costs for the Limitless Libraries bookmobile have increased and that additional funders are needed to cover staffing and maintenance; historically, a Dollar General Literacy Foundation grant had covered the program but expenses are rising.

The foundation said Begin Bridal fundraising events are underway (small gatherings this summer and fall) and that a gala is planned, with author Amor Towles appearing in conversation at a ticketed Friday evening event and a public Saturday lecture with John Meacham. Board members discussed String City: Wishing Chair Productions staged String City and the foundation arranged for marionettes honoring Steve and Judy Turner to be displayed during performances; the marionettes were later returned to the Turner family.
