Committee approves three veterans-family scholarships; committee notes eligibility and small award amounts
Summary
The committee approved three scholarship recipients from remaining event funds; two applications were clearly eligible and one applicant was ineligible due to residency. The Veterans Committee approved three recipients for the veterans-family scholarship program and directed staff to notify winners and present awards at the Reindeer Run, the committee said.
Committee members reported there were three applications but only two fully met residency criteria; the third applicant listed addresses outside Miami Lakes and therefore did not qualify. The two eligible Bernal applicants and Grace Fernandez were approved by committee motion and voice vote. The committee recorded that the awards were being paid from remaining 5K/reindeer-run funds after earlier reallocations to monument planning.
Committee members discussed the award amount and the accounting. During the meeting staff described the split as yielding $25.93 and 33¢ per recipient as written in the motion; members noted a one-cent remainder and agreed to move that penny into the monument fund. Committee members asked the scholarship recipients to attend the Reindeer Run for a presentation.
The committee instructed staff to send formal notification letters to recipients, including thanks to their veteran family members for service, and to coordinate presentation logistics for event day. No changes to eligibility rules were adopted at the meeting.
