A Girl Scout troop offered to gather names, biographies and GPS locations for trees and buildings named after local people and to produce QR-code content for Veterans Park and other town sites, the Veterans Committee said.
The troop (identified in the meeting as Girl Scout troop 902) volunteered to collect names, contact next of kin where possible, and create a GPS-tagged database so each named tree or facility can link to a short biography via a QR code. Committee members said the effort will cover Veterans Park and other town parks and noted two temporary QR signs already exist.
Committee members and staff discussed a phased approach: (1) inventory all named trees and structures, (2) research biographies or contact next of kin for approved text, (3) assemble QR content and GPS locations, and (4) consider permanent ground or plaque-mounted markers with sponsorship options. Isabel (staff) and parks director Jeremy were asked to share site locations and any existing biographical text with the troop; volunteers will look for obituaries and other public records when relatives are not available.
Members discussed fundraising options to fund permanent markers and suggested a sponsorship program that would allow donors and businesses to pay for durable markers with tasteful sponsor recognition. The committee also discussed placing a small, tasteful permanent marker or glass-etched plaque near a QR installation and using the images in fundraising outreach.
No permanent signage contract was approved at the meeting; committee members directed staff to coordinate with the troop, collect available bios, and return with options and cost estimates for permanent markers.
