Board approves disposal of obsolete library books after debate over role of school libraries

The Cornwall Central School District Board of Education approved a resolution on July 14 to declare a list of library books obsolete and authorize their disposal. The vote followed an extended discussion in which board members urged care in decisions about library collections and raised the value of keeping certain titles accessible on shelves.

Board members said many titles become worn, dated or otherwise inappropriate for curricular needs and that periodic catalog review is standard library practice. At the same time, some members urged preserving titles that serve reference or community needs even if they are not frequently checked out. One board member specifically referenced a previously contested title, The Hate U Give, noting that its classification as “surplus” rather than obsolete prompted concern about how decisions are made and when copies are removed from shelves.

Speakers also discussed the difference between a library as an archive versus an actively used collection. A board member described the role of visible, on-shelf materials in helping readers discover unexpected resources and said that some items function as entry points for students who may not otherwise seek help.

After debate, the board approved the resolution to dispose of the listed items. Members said the process for future collection decisions should include clearer documentation of reasons for removal and suggested continued collaboration with library staff and community stakeholders when future controversial titles are considered.
