Parks department reports log clearing, new dog park, trail funding and several repairs in July update

The parks department provided a July operations update to the Lake Stevens parks board covering recent openings, maintenance work, staffing and funded planning efforts. Staff said storm‑downed logs at Catherine Creek from the recent ‘‘bomb cyclone’’ will be taken to a mill for processing; some wood was left in place for habitat. Westlake Dog Park opened to the public June 25; staff noted new ADA‑accessible bench pads and updated signage. Staff also said new monument signage for Bayview Trailhead and planned design work for Cedarwood are progressing. The department reported recently completed plumbing repairs at a lending concession and restroom building (completed July 4) and a planned abutment repair at Sunset Beach to correct scour damage; the abutment work will require heavy equipment and a temporary park closure. The city received $500,000 in the state budget for planning the next phase of the Bayview Trail (project will extend from Twelfth to Eighth Street, staff said); the department will advance design from 30% to 100% and bring details back to the board when available. Staff also rolled out parking notifications at North Cove boat launch clarifying trailer parking stalls and a $100 violation penalty for trailers parked improperly. Staff announced two personnel updates: Isaiah Green was promoted from seasonal worker to full‑time park maintenance worker and Danny Suber was hired as parks maintenance lead; both began work July 1, staff said. The department also noted that a previously reported tax levy proposal has been placed on hold pending feasibility review. On the municipal memorial, staff said the American Legion and the War Memorial Foundation opted to limit changes to replacing emblems and not to alter the memorial wall; staff explained that the concrete wall has soil‑borne staining and stress cracks and that a full replacement is not included in the city’s six‑year capital plan. The department said they have an MOU with the Arts and Parks Foundation for ongoing maintenance of art pieces installed on site.
