Hoover council orders abatement for multiple properties; one case withdrawn after compliance

The Hoover City Council authorized abatement for multiple properties with weed or vegetation nuisances at its July meeting and withdrew one case after city code staff confirmed the property had been cut.
Resolutions declaring nuisance and directing abatement were approved for 425 Shades Avenue, 2413 Regent Circle, 3456 Blueberry Lane, 2337 Tyler Road, 2882 Wisteria Drive and others. Code enforcement staff told the council the properties remain in violation in most cases. For 2045 Cross Crest Drive, staff reported the property had been self-corrected and the council voted to withdraw the abatement resolution.
On 2125 Tyler Lane, code enforcement reported not only ongoing weeds and grass violations but also a collapsed tree and significant structural deterioration of the house itself. Staff said the building is unsecured and deteriorated and that the city intends to include a line item in next year's budget to abate the structure if the owner does not take corrective action. "Abatement of the home is a rare occurrence in Hoover," staff said, but noted previous structural abatements have occurred when necessary.
For one parcel on Larchmont Circle, staff reported they had located a niece who stands to inherit the property and expected that relative to arrange for cutting; the council approved abatement as a contingency to avoid restarting the legal process if the property remains unmaintained.
Each abatement resolution was considered after a public hearing; in the cases reported as still in violation staff recommended abatement and the council approved the actions by voice vote. The withdrawals and updates were recorded in council minutes and will be followed up by code enforcement.
