Board approves National Balloon Classic road closure; nearby residents ask county for earlier dust control

The Warren County Board of Supervisors approved an application to close county roads for the National Balloon Classic and noted the county has taken stronger closure measures on some roads to reduce spectator traffic through gravel neighborhoods.

During public comment, residents who live near the balloon field asked the county to coordinate dust-control treatment earlier than last year. One resident said Smith (the contractor) would not apply dust control until the engineer certified the road grading was complete; the resident asked that the county prioritize grading so the contractor can treat the road before the Balloon Classic.

County staff said in recent years the county has placed a hard closure on 150th Street during the event to reduce traffic and gravel carry-back to town. Staff also explained that contractors typically will not apply dust control until roads are graded; grading after application can negate the treatment. Supervisors encouraged residents to coordinate with the county engineer and county staff so treatment windows are aligned with the event schedule.

Separately, a motion to approve the road-closure request passed by roll call. Board members acknowledged they expect calls from residents about dust and traffic, and they urged coordination among residents, the engineer and county road contractors to ensure dust control can be applied prior to large events.
