Warren County approves hiring a zoning administrative assistant amid county hiring freeze

The Warren County Board of Supervisors voted Tuesday to approve hiring a zoning administrative assistant to restore capacity in an understaffed zoning office.
The approval came amid an ongoing countywide hiring freeze intended to “right-size” staffing relative to revenue. Supervisors said the zoning office experienced a departure earlier in the year and has been operating with reduced staff while the county undertakes a large recodification of its zoning ordinance and prepares for multiple rezoning hearings.
A supervisor moved to approve hiring the zoning administrative assistant; another supervisor seconded the motion and the board approved the hire by roll call. The motion passed; supervisors voting in favor included Erickson, DeWitt, Arnold and McIntyre.
Board members said the position will provide needed support for forthcoming zoning hearings and ordinance recodification and that the hire was discussed at a prior work session. The board did not amend the county hiring-freeze policy; rather, it approved the specific backfill in light of workload in the zoning office.
Supervisors noted that the hire would be welcome news to zoning staff and said they expect the office to be better able to handle increased public hearings and administrative tasks as recodification work continues.
