Board members reported on a site visit to a proposed loop trail at Dungeness Recreation Area, a capital improvement project the board ranked as its top priority.
Staff and board members said the loop would run along an old road bed, tie into the park entrance, and could be routed to avoid low‑brush habitat that supports nesting birds. Board members favored a trail alignment that parallels the park entrance roadway and stays inside a row of planted trees, arguing that approach would offer a woodland feel and reduce impacts on bird habitat. One member cautioned that weaving a trail through hummocks and habitat areas could raise opposition from environmental advocates.
Staff recommended mapping alternatives and said a consultant for mapping and environmental review would provide detailed alternatives and impact analyses. The board asked staff to return with maps, alternative alignments and cost estimates before any decision to spend capital funds.
